Joburg’s restaurant scene is always chopping and changing and in this month’s edition of our restaurant news blog there’s plenty to catch up on including new restaurants in Melville, a Michelin star pop up at the Four Seasons, a new monthly artisanal food market in Rosebank and two great restaurant giveaways.
Goût de France brings Michelin star cuisine to Joburg
Joburg joins the annual Goût de France celebration of French gastronomy from Mar 15-25. Highlights of the 2018 Goût de France programme include Michelin star French chef Vincent Lucas’s pop up at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff and a series of dinners at the new SA Culinary Club in Bryanston hosted by Alain Ducasse’s incredibly talented protégé Wandile Mabaso. New cocktail menu at Marabi Club
Downtown Joburg’s coolest underground bar and restaurant The Marabi Club (currently hosting a pop-up restaurant headed by Australian chef Russell Armstrong and San Pellegrino Young Chef 2018 finalist Vusi Ndlovu) is going from strength to strength with the latest edition to the team being Julian Short. Voted South Africa’s best mixologist 2017 and bartender of the year for 2018, the head barman from Rosebank’s ‘secret’ speakeasy Sin+Tax will be creating an exclusive new cocktail menu for the club every three months.

New in Melville
Chef James Diack (of Coobs and The National fame) has closed his American diner The Federal on 7th Street in Melville and is setting up a new Italian restaurant La Stalla in its place. The new ‘industrial-chic pizzeria’ promises well-priced small plates, wood-fired dishes and pizza options, roasted chicken, fresh salads and gelato. As James puts it “this will be my simplest restaurant to date, and I can’t wait to share the experience with Melville.” The new restaurant is expected to open late March.
Meanwhile across the road next to neighbourhood stalwart Ant Cafe, the team behind Melville’s popular Hell’s Kitchen bar and Santa Muerte Mexican restaurant have launched their latest venture The Lonely Hearts Club offering Spanish-style tapas, classic cocktails and retro ’80s tunes.
Keyes Art Mile launches The Pantry Market
The latest monthly artisanal market to join Joburg’s foodie calendar is The Pantry Market at Keyes Art Mile. The Pantry Market promises to bring together some of the region’s best artisanal produce – think small-batch local organic honey, farmhouse cheeses, vegan ice-cream, handmade pasta and gourmet chocolates. A major highlight is the A moveable Feast stall showcasing products by top local chefs that can only be bought at the market including quince jelly straight from chef James Diack’s family farm and marmalade from the personal citrus garden of chef Jacques Erasmus from Cape Town’s celebrated Hemelhuijs cafe. The first Pantry Market takes place on March 24 from 09:00-14:00.
