Joburg’s capital of cool, Braamfontein’s streets are a veritable catwalk for the city’s street fashion rebels with plenty of colourful urban backdrops that make for the perfect Instagram photo.
Here’s our guide to eight places to capture the most Instagrammable Braamfontein street style shot.
Neighbourgoods market
At the corner of Juta and De Beer Streets, the Saturday Neighbourgoods market is a magnet for the city’s hipsters and cool kids who arrive on mass to hang out on the Neighbourgoods rooftop enjoying cocktails and delicious street food. This is also a brilliant place to snap a unique birdseye perspective on the neighbourhood. The alleyway entrance to the market with its colourful lanterns is another good spot to model your latest outfit.
Reserve Street
This small street that links Jorissen and De Korte Streets has a had a major makeover during the last year and is now filled with greenery courtesy of an ingenious hanging garden. The fact that few cars pass through this minor road also make it easier to capture that perfect middle-of-the-street shot.
Braamfontein alleyways
The alleyways running parallel to Juta and De Korte streets are filled with unusual graffiti murals and hidden art installations created by local artists who were commissioned to bring colour and verve to what would otherwise ordinarily be a dark and neglected space.
Graffiti murals
One of the most distinctive features of Braamfontein is its abundance of street art. Around almost every corner there’s a cool new mural just waiting for you to stand in front of it and snap a picture. Major graffiti hotspots include the streets around Joburg’s graffiti art gallery Grayscale in the collection of city blocks bounded by Station and Eendracht Streets.
99 Juta
If it’s good enough for Vogue Italia, then it’s good enough for you. Interior design emporium 99 Juta’s millennial pink courtyard is a high fashion favourite.
Once in Joburg
With its quirky and colourful design finishes and a choice of inviting hangout spots, Once in Joburg is a welcoming hostel for solo travellers or groups that sits right in the heart of the Braamfontein action on the colourful piazza The Grove. Created with the Millenial traveller in mind, Once in Joburg also has plenty of cosy corners for capturing a classic selfie.
Randlords rooftop
Quite simply one of Joburg’s finest rooftop venues, Randlords promises magnificent skyline views. The club is only open for special club nights and concerts though so keep an eye on their facebook page for the latest upcoming parties.
Constitution Hill
Joburg’s national heritage landmark Constitution Hill is the venue for the annual Afropunk Joburg festival, the ultimate celebration of alternative black urban street style. The ramparts of the Old Fort, the oldest section of the Constitution Hill complex, present great city panoramas and are a popular photoshoot destination both with ordinary Joburgers and trendsetting fashion photographers.
