Joburg’s weekend events scene is finally warming up. Restrictions on crowd sizes still remain in place but if you’re looking for interesting pop-ups, markets, parties and other cool events, the good news is they’re back on the Joburg calendar.
Here are our suggestions for this weekend.
Convoy Spring Garden pop-up at Heart & Heritage
SAT SEP 4: Convoy, a beautiful store at Melville’s Bamboo Centre showcasing boutique South African fashion brands, has joined forces with the Heart & Heritage boutique at the REEA Foundation overlooking Delta Park to present a special garden pop-up. Fashion, jewellery and accessories brands to shop include Sitting Pretty, Hannah Lavery and Romaria. Pop into Delta Cafe next door afterwards for lunch and drinks.

Drag brunch at A Streetbar Named Desire
SAT SEP 4: Joburg’s divas are back for the dazzling Saturday drag brunch party at A Streetbar Named Desire on Parkwood’s Park Corner. Watch performances by some of South Africa’s top drag artists while sipping on mimosas over brunch. The brunch and performances start from 10:30 for 11:00. Book your table by calling +27 11 268 6485.

First Sundays at Victoria Yards
SUN SEP 5: Always a weekend favourite, it’s time for another edition of First Sundays at Victoria Yards. Connect with artists at one of the many open artist studios, shop for local handmade fashion and gifts, grab a bite from one of the food trucks and of course who can resist Joburg’s best fish and chip shop. Also returning for this edition is the Maker’s Market and there’s live music to look forward to in the gardens.

Perfect Sundays in Soweto
SUN SEP 5: After being postponed last week due to the abysmal weather, Soweto’s Perfect Sundays get-together is finally kicking off this weekend. Organised by the team who launched the Locrate market, “good food, live music and chilled vibes” are all promised. Going down on Poka Street in Orlando West from 12:00.

Exhibitions launches
SAT SEP 4: On Saturday morning check out Conrad Botes’ brand new solo exhibition The Anatomy Lesson at Kalashnikovv and Lizamore & Associates launch their new satellite gallery with a group exhibition at Firestation in Rosebank.
SUN SEP 5: On Sunday the 2021 Joburg Fringe opens at The Art Room on 4th Avenue in Parkhurst.
And if staying in is more your speed right now…
SAT SEP 4: Joburg Heritage presents another online history talk, this time looking at the history of Jeppestown. Led by local historian Mark Latilla (follow his excellent blog johannesburg1912.com) this talk explores Jeppe and Belgravia’s early history and heritage buildings. The talk costs R60 for Joburg Heritage members and R100 for non-members.
