From March 10 to 16 the Graskop Gorge Lift in Mpumalanga’s Drakensberg Escarpment region hosts Beautiful Things, a colourful showcase of the work of ninety of South Africa’s finest contemporary crafters.
The exhibition has drawn talented crafters from all corners of South Africa. The works on show are grouped under various categories and pay homage to both traditional and contemporary styles. They include original works made in ceramics, beadwork, wirework, wood, jewellery, paper, fabric painting and printing, quilting, leatherwork, pewter, glasswork, embroidery, and mixed media.
The exhibition is curated by artist John-Anthony Boerma from Art Aid and co-curated by Mandla Hlophe of Malengs Holdings. As the name suggests it’s a glorious showcase of Beautiful Things, all of which are available to buy.
More than 1,000 makers from across the country applied to exhibit at this year’s Beautiful Things. The final 90 who were selected for the exhibition represent the “diversity and vibrancy” of the South African craft sector.
WHEN AND WHERE: The exhibition is open 08:30–17:00 at Graskop Gorge Lift near Graskop Mpumalanga from March 10 to 16. For those who are not able to attend, the exhibition opening is also available to stream on Facebook here. Follow @beautifulthingscraft on Instagram and Facebook for more info.
