Brooklyn’s Annual Vintage & Collectables Fair
MON MAR 21 Pretoria’s oldest and biggest antiques and collectibles event, returns on Human Rights Day with a special charity fundraising edition in aid of the SPCA. An antique shopping extravaganza, expect more than 75 dealers showcasing everything from art to toys, collectable coins, books, jewellery, designer clothing, antique furniture, porcelain and architectural salvage. The market is open from 08:30–16:00 at Brooklyn Mall (cnr Veal St and Middel St, Pretoria).
French Food Market at Victoria Yards
SAT MAR 19 Victoria Yards hosts its second food themed market of 2022 in association with Institut Français. Presenting a taste of France there are plenty of stalls selling imported delicacies from France as well as locally made products with a French flavour, all complemented by live music and a festive atmosphere. The market is open 10:30 to 16:00. Entrance is free.
Clamber Club on the Piazza at Melrose Arch
FRI MAR 18 – SUN MAR 20 This weekend Melrose Arch launches its brand new open-air Kids Clamber Club on the piazza, operating every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Clamber Club takes over the entire area at the centre of the Melrose Arch piazza and is aimed at kids aged 2 to 12 with jumping castles, a soft play area, ball pond, arts and crafts activities, face painting, balloon artists, engaging games and other creative play activities. Clamber Club is open every Fri, Sat and Sun 11:00 to 17:00, entrance costs R50 per child.
SoliiDad at Joburg Theatre
THU MAR 17 – SUN MAR 20 Acclaimed South African dancer and choreographer, Vincent Sekwati Mantsoe presents his new solo piece Soliidad, which tells through dance the story of “a quest to an emperor’s elegant path to oblivion” described as resembling “birds taking flight, lions prey, howling dogs in the distance, winds, and dust raised to a silent storm”. The Human Rights Festival at Constitution Hill
SAT MAR 19 – MON MAR 21 The fourth annual Human Rights Festival takes place at Constitution Hill this weekend. This free festival celebrates South Africa’s spirit of activism with public lectures, a poetry festival, film screenings, live music, and workshops. Acts on the music line-up include Solidarity Express, Ms. Party and Vusi Mahlasela. Find the programme online at humanrightsfestival.co.za. Entrance is free.
Joburg Zoo Birthday Bash
SUN MAR 21 The Joburg Zoo celebrates its 118th birthday with live music, a comedy show, film screenings (film schedule TBC) and lots of activities for kids including jumping castles, and presentations about wildlife conservation. Entrance to the birthday bash costs R50 and includes entrance to the zoo. The festivities run from 10:00 until 21:00.
Hey Hillbrow! Let’s Dlala! Parade
MON MAR 21 Hillbrow celebrates Human Rights Day with this joyful and colourful parade to Constitution Hill led by the KwaSha Theatre Company, Windybrow Arts Centre, Dlala Nje and a host of other Hillbrow youth upliftment organisations. The parade is envisaged as a joyous carnival-like celebration filled with dancing, singing and curated performances led by youth from the community. Starts from 10:00 at the Windybrow Arts Centre (cnr Banket and Pietersen Streets).
