Nedbank International Polo
SAT APR 2 Put your best fashion foot forward for this one. After almost two years out of action due to the pandemic, the Nedbank International Polo tournament finally returns to Joburg. Baby Yellow – Ryan Arenson at David Krut Gallery
SAT APR 2 AT 10:30 Head to David Krut Projects for the launch of a new exhibition by Ryan Arenson, who will also be leading a walkabout of his new show. Showcasing digital, ink and pencil works as well as prints and books, Arenson’s exhibition is filled with fantastical images of a 6-year alter-ego, named Baby Yellow, conjured from the artist’s imagination. Takes place at 151 Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood. Entrance is free.
First Sundays at Victoria Yards
SUN APR 3 Always a summer Sunday favourite, First Sundays at Victoria Yards is back again this weekend. In addition to the many open artist studios and galleries to explore, there’s also a great pop-up market with loads of vintage items on sale, delicious food trucks and pop-up bars, and the best fish and chips in town. Takes place at 16 Viljoen St, Lorentzville. Gates open from 10:30, entrance is free.
Ihubu – Song of Ages at Joburg Theatre
FRI APR 1 – SUN APR 3 Musician and heritage activist Mbuso Khoza launches his newest project Ihubo – Song of Ages at Joburg Theatre this weekend. Known for championing the stirring amaHubo musical tradition (a powerful praise song tradition that dates back to King Shaka’s time), this new show mixes traditional sounds with western gospel influences to trace the extraordinary history of gospel and praise music in South Africa. Nelson Mandela Square Antique Fair
SUN APR 3 This monthly antique fair at Nelson Mandela Square is one of the biggest of its kind with top collectors and antique dealers taking part. From furniture and homeware to decorative arts and collectable memorabilia, set aside some time browse and you’ll no doubt find something special. Takes place 10:00–16:00, entrance is free.
The Jozi Kota Festival
SAT APR 2 Dedicated foodies and kota fans should assemble at The Station in Newtown on Saturday for the annual Jozi Kota Festival. Organisers promise the biggest variety of stalls selling classic and contemporary kota combinations. Camp chairs are welcome, and of course make sure you bring a big appetite too. Tickets booked online cost R80, students R60, kids R50, available online here.
Joburg’s Arcades walking tour by Joburg Heritage
SAT APR 2 Join Johannesburg Heritage Foundation on a walking tour exploring the delights of downtown Joburg’s last remaining Victorian and Edwardian arcades. A fascinating trip through the earliest days of the city’s history, the tour includes a visit to the historic Somerset House on Gandhi Square. The tour starts from 14:00, booking is essential! Brooklyn’s Antique Fair
SAT APR 2 Taking place every first Saturday of the month, Brooklyn’s Antique Fair at Brooklyn Mall in Pretoria, is one of Tshwane’s best known antique shopping extravaganzas. Expect a variety of dealers showcasing beautiful collectables, jewellery, clothing, artworks and more plus the opportunity to get your own treasures valued by the experts. Takes place at Brooklyn Mall, Brooklyn, Pretoria from 09:00–15:00. Entrance is free.
The Lawns Picnic with Homie.Lover.Friend at Kleine Rijke
SAT 2 APR The Lawns Picnic is a chic alfresco brunch hosted by local event organisers Homie.Lover.Friend. Taking place at the lovely Kleine Rijke venue overlooking Hartbeespoort Dam, in addition to a two-course Mediterranean feast box for lunch, there’s also live music from Banda Banda and DJ sets throughout the afternoon. Tickets R700, available online here. There is also a shuttle service to and from the Sandton Gautrain station for an additional R200.
