Sunday Comedy at The Bioscope
SUN APR 10 Every Sunday The Bioscope independent cinema in 44 Stanley host a live stand-up comedy showcase to end the week on a high. Up on the comedy stage this week is the fab Lindy Johnson, Nicolas Goliath, and host with the most Mo Mothebe. The show starts at 18:30. We recommend popping by earlier to enjoy drinks in the courtyard beforehand. Tickets R120, available online here.
Simphiwe Dana at Joburg Theatre
FRI APR 8 – SUN APR 10 Afro-soul songstress Simphiwe Dana joins forces with Gregory Maqoma’s Vuyani Dance Company for Moya, a special new show on the Joburg Theatre stage themed around healing, spirituality, and connection. Moya takes audiences through the acapella roots of Simphiwe Dana’s music, accompanied by dance performances and art direction from the acclaimed choreographer. DJ Black Coffee
FRI APR 8 & SUN APR 10 Fresh from his success at the Grammys last week where he won Best dance/electronic album, South Africa’s world superstar DJ Black Coffee returns to Joburg’s club scene this weekend. He’s taking over the Zone 6 Venue in Soweto on Friday night (doors open from 17:00, tickets R150, available online here) and is on the decks on Sunday at the Chasing Sunsets party at Altitude Beach in Fourways (from 14:00, tickets R550 available here).
Obrigado Party at Untitled Basement
SAT APR 9 Braamfontein’s sorely missed live music and events venue Untitled Basement is finally reopening! The Untitled Basement kicks off its great return with DJs Tha Muzik and Kenzhero’s Obrigado party, a long-running party that is also celebrating a new partnership with Apple Music. Expect a great mix of upbeat Latino, Afrobeat and other highly danceable funky sounds. Takes place at Untitled Basement, 7 Reserve St, Braamfontein. Tickets R150, available online here.
Johannesburg Cap Classique and Champagne fest
SAT APR 9–SUN APR 10 The glamorous Johannesburg Cap Classique & Champagne Festival, held at Sandton’s Inanda Polo Club, is a luxurious showcase of the very best in bubbles from local and international labels. To accompany your sipping and sampling, there are also food stalls and live music. Dress in your finest, the theme for this chic garden party is blue and white. Note that you need to show your proof of vaccination at the entrance. Tickets R395, available online here, including a glass and 10 tasting coupons.
Rand Club Antique, Book Faire & Artisanal Market
SAT APR 9 Rand Club presents another edition of this fair dedicated to all things vintage and antique. Shop for books, antiques, vintage posters and other treasures from yesteryear while exploring the grand interiors of one of Joburg’s oldest buildings. There are also guided tours of this wonderful heritage property available at 09:30 and 10:30 plus the chance to enjoy food and drinks at Rand Club’s beautiful bar or from one of the market stalls. Entrance R50, kids under 12 free.
Chocolate Cafe at Sandton City
UNTIL APR 17 Sandton City’s Easter chocolate extravaganza Chocolate Cafe comes to the Centre Court next to Checkers Hyper this April featuring all of the biggest chocolate brands such as Beacon, Cadbury, Lindt, Kinder Joy and Ferrero Rocher. For the kids there’s an egg painting station and of course everyone’s favourite Easter Bunny will be there greeting visitors. Chocolate Cafe is open 11:00–16:00, entrance costs R30 with a portion of proceeds donated to charity.
