Feya Faku at Untitled Basement
SAT AUG 13 Powerhouse trumpeter Feya Faku returns to the Untitled Basement stage playing compositions from two recent albums, ‘Impilo’ and ‘Live at the Bird’s Eye’. Joining him on stage are Bokani Dyer on keys, Keenan Ahrends on the guitar, Romy Brauteseth on Bass, and Sphelelo Mazibuko on drums. This concert takes place at one of Braamfontein’s coolest underground spaces, Untitled Basement on Reserve Street. Tickets are R300 online here
Don Giovanni at Joburg Theatre
FRI AUG 12– SUN AUG 21 To celebrate the theatre’s 60th birthday, Joburg Theatre stages a spectacular new production of Mozart’s classic “opera buffa” Don Giovanni. For this major celebratory show, the theatre has pulled out all the stops with an international cast of performers, a full symphony orchestra, and dazzling sets. Singing the role of Don Ottavio is South African-born tenor Musa Nkuna, who is also an artistic consultant on this production. Find out more and book your tickets here.
Mix Cocktail Bar Jazz Club Sessions
WED AUG 10 Every Wednesday head over to the Mix Cocktail Bar located on the second floor of the Trumpet building at Keyes Art Mile in Rosebank from 19:00 for some jazzy tunes by Kopano Jazz Collective. Bring along your mates and enjoy fresh cocktails, delicious food, and a soulful music connection. Entrance is free although booking is essential at concierge@meshclub.co.za.
Sunday Comedy Nights at The Bioscope
SUN AUG 14 Every Sunday The Bioscope independent cinema in 44 Stanley host a live stand-up comedy showcase to end the week on a high. Every week see three different local stand-up comedians taking to the stage and you are always guaranteed to catch a famous local name taking to the stage, the likes of Loyiso Madinga, Mo Mothebe and Robby Collins. On the lineup this week Sunday is Prins, Shanray Van Wyk, and Dillan Oliphant. The show starts at 18:30. Pop by earlier to enjoy drinks in the courtyard beforehand. Brass Quintet – Minnesota Orchestra
SUN AUG 14 The incredible Minnesota Orchestra take to the Linder Auditorium stage for two concerts in Joburg, masterclasses and workshops with local students. Expect the music of Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Astor Piazzolla, and Paquito D’ Rivera as well as African American spirituals, and brand new works by award-winning composer Jack Stamp. Performances on Sun Aug 14 at 15:00 and Sun Sep 18 at 15:00.
Obrigado Gin Experience at Thathu Restaurant
FRI AUG 12 The popular Latino-house music club night Obrigado, led by Soweto-born DJs Kenzhero and Tha Muzik collaborate with Thathu Restaurant for the Obrigado Gin Experience. Enjoy an evening of Obrigado Gin cocktails and inspired African cuisine from Thathu Restaurant, and tunes on the decks from Tha Muzik and Mam Thug who is known for curating the Beats By Her music events. Book Launch: William Kentridge and Warren Siebrits in Conversation at Rand Club
SAT AUG 13 Join internationally acclaimed South African artist, William Kentridge, and renowned South African art collector and historian, Warren Siebrits, at Rand Club for a conversation about the Kentridge family and their ties to Johannesburg spanning over three generations. This event will also see the launch of the deluxe edition of the Domestic Scenes book published by Siebrits and Kentridge. Copies are available for R950 at the James Findlay Gallery at Rand Club.
