Trend-spotting: August’s most popular features

Lockdown is slowly easing up and many experts believe we may finally have passed the ‘peak’ of coronavirus infections. Throughout it all at Johannesburg In Your Pocket we have continued to work harder than ever to share fresh, compelling and informative content that showcases small businesses, innovative initiatives and interesting local attractions.

Trending this month: When it was finally announced that leisure tourism would be allowed again, and even that intra-provincial travel for the purposes of holidays was at last allowed too, we saw some major spikes in people looking for interesting stayovers and local holiday ideas. Similarly, when alcohol and sit-in dining at restaurants returned, South Africans were excited to support their local restaurants again. And, as ever, nature still remained our number one trend for the fourth month running.

Here’s a look at our five most popular website features on johannesburg.inyourpocket.com this August:

The quirkiest hotels in South Africa

From ancient caves to quirky teepees and a luxury boutique hotel atop a railways bridge in the middle of the Kruger Park, South Africa has lots of fun and unusual places to book a memorable stayover if you want something different from the usual.

Considering a stayover in a houseboat ourselves, we decided to get digging to find what other unusual places you can stay on holiday in South Africa, and we were not disappointed by what’s on offer! Read it online here.

Support South Africa’s restaurants! Where to eat out in Joburg this month

It’s been a devastating time for the restaurant industry across the world and now more than ever, restaurants need our support! After months of disrupted service, in August restaurant service went back to as close to normal as we can get in these times with the ban on alcohol lifted and sit-in service again allowed.

Despite the curfew and social distancing, Joburgers couldn’t wait to get out again and our ever-growing feature on restaurants who had reopened was a major hit with readers. Read it online here.

Joburg’s best delis

As more and more restaurants and cafes reconfigured their spaces to also offer deli options, there was plenty to update in our always popular guide to Joburg’s best delis.

From where to get the best salamis and the freshest fish to tasty meals ready to heat at home, Joburgers were really enjoying treating themselves at the local deli this month. Read it online here.

Hiking in and around Joburg – Gauteng’s best hiking trails

Joburgers just can’t get enough of hiking and week on week we have thousands of people scrolling through the Johannesburg In Your Pocket website in search of ideas on new hikes to tackle in Gauteng.

To keep the hiking fans happy (and to ensure those who have told us that they are diligently working their way through our hiking ‘list’ continually have something new to try) we made sure to get out this month and seek out some new trails to add 2020’s most popular feature. Read our updated guide to the best hiking trails here.

And finally… Drive-In Cinema

Perhaps it was nostalgia, or perhaps a lot of us were really desperately running out ways to keep entertained at home, but there’s something about drive-in cinema that has really captured the imagination of Joburgers.

One Fourways Irish pub made the innovative move to turn itself into a drive-in cinema and roadhouse and Joburgers couldn’t get enough of it! Read about the Molly Malones Drive-in here.
