Trending this month: With parks and beaches temporarily closed across the country, everyone was searching for those beautiful outdoor spaces which we were allowed to legally enjoy. The impatient wait for the latest alcohol ban to end was another major trend, although the alcohol ban didn’t seem to stop people from planning their next romantic Joburg date and studying this year’s best new restaurants list for ideas for their next dinner out.

2020’s best new restaurants

Every January we look back over our reviews and pull together a guide to the best new bars restaurants and cafes visited by the In Your Pocket team during the past year. While 2020 was a difficult year for the hospitality industry with many closures, lots of restaurateurs made the brave step to open new businesses too.

Romance

The search from romance in lockdown is real and month on month we find readers scouring our website for fresh date night ideas. Of course with Valentine’s Day just a few weeks away our Romantic Joburg feature was a source of inspiration for many. Booze is back

From late December through January South Africa underwent its third alcohol ban in a year. It always pays to plan ahead and our famous guide to pre-ordering booze online for delivery after lockdown was another big hit the third time around.

Beautiful Joburg walks

Joburger’s were desperate to get out to the park in January although those parks without ‘controlled access points’ were temporarily closed. We took a look at what public parks and nature reserves within the city were open and found plenty of places to get out and enjoy a summer stroll.
