Joburg weekend events guide: Nov 12–14, 2021

Here’s a look at five fresh events that caught our eye this week.

Vino in Piazza – Wines of Italy at Hyde Park Corner

FRI 12 NOV – SUN 14 NOV A special treat for the lovers of Italian wine and cuisine, Vino in Piazza, sponsored by the Italian Consulate, showcases 20 wineries from Italy offering three days of top class wine tasting. The event is also bringing in top Italian chefs demonstrating how to cook up some traditional recipes., including “The King of Carbonara” himself, Michelin-starred Chef Luciano Monosilio, who will be demonstrating his famous take on the classic spaghetti carbonara on Sunday.  The event takes place on the rooftop parking area of Hyde Park Corner, doors open at 15:00 on Fri, and 10:00 on Sat and Sun. The Night Embassy – Unmute the City at Carfax

FRI 12 NOV SUN 14 NOV Night Embassy by Jägermeister brings a series of unique nightlife events to Joburg this spring, kicking off this week with Unmute The City at the Carfax club in Newtown. The three-day party promises to ”give a voice to the unheard” showcasing unique DJs, rappers, singers and visual artists with a distinctly Afro-futuristic sound. Tickets cost R100 per night or R250 for a 3 nights pass. Book online here.  

Opera at Rand Club with Phumeza Matshikiza

FRI NOV 12  Stuttgart-based opera star Pumeza Matshikiza performs at a special recital in one of Joburg’s most beautiful heritage buildings, Rand Club accompanied on piano by Marnus Greyling. Tickets R350 (Rand Club members R260). Book online here.   

Garden Concert at Alliance Francaise

FRI NOV 12  The Alliance Française in Parkview host an open-air concert in their sunny garden with French-Afrikaans singer Philomène Rust on the stage. Takes place at the Alliance Francaise at 17 Lower Park Dr (opposite Zoo Lake), Parkview. Tickets R330, book online here. 

Joburg Heritage Walking Tour: Art Deco meets African Riviera

SUN NOV 14 Join Joburg Heritage for a walking tour through the suburbs of Killarney and Riviera, historic neighbourhoods that are home to politicians, musicians and actors. The tour focuses on the area’s unique art deco architecture and includes visits to landmark heritage buildings including Gleneagles and the award-winning Oxford Shul. The tour heads out at 14:00 and booking is essential. Tickets cost R200 for non-Joburg Heritage members. Book at mail@joburgheritage.co.za.
