International Day of Mother Languages at Goethe-Institut

SAT MAR 12 Goethe-Institut celebrates the International Day of Mother Languages with a multilingual festival that includes spoken word performances by poets Belita Andre, Busisiwe Mahlangu, and Castro Obita, as well as performances by Xhosa rapper Laliboi and DJs Deniece Marz and Mack Rapapali, an open mic session, storytelling and more. Takes place at Goethe-Institut in Parkwood. Doors open from 10:00, entrance is free.

Ba.One Pop Up Moshoeshoe Day party at Constitution Hill

SAT MAR 12 Celebrated every year on March 11, Moshoeshoe Day is a public holiday in honour of King Moshoeshoe, the founder of the Basotho nation. Constitution Hill hosts its first-ever pop-up with Basotho promoters Ba.One on Saturday celebrating all things Lesotho including food, clothing and of course music. Artists on the long lineup include rapper Morena Leraba, singer Maleh and DJ Bootz. The party takes place at Constitution Hill 12:00–23:00. Tickets R300 online here via Quicket.

Disco Sundowners at Even After All at 44 Stanley

SAT MAR 12 Pop by the Even After All cafe-bar in 44 Stanley for the Disco Sundowners drag show hosted by drag queens Adam and Phoenix. Don’t forget to dress up and look fabulous! Doors open from 16:00, entrance is free.

Kulture Blues Festival at Joburg Theatre

SAT MAR 12 The second edition of the Kulture Blues Festival takes place at the Joburg Theatre hosted by comedian Roni Modimola with performances by exciting local acts. Expect a mix of jazz sounds and traditional instruments from the likes of Malcolm Jiyane and the Uprize Ensemble, Tumi Mogorosi and Gabi Motuba, and isiXhosa instrumentalist Luyolo Lenga. Takes place 15:00– 21:15 at Joburg Theatre. Tickets R250 online here.

The Playground in Braamfontein

SAT MAR 12 Braamfontein’s weekly market The Playground is the place to be on Saturdays with delicious food stalls, cool local fashion, a great rooftop party space and live music and DJs turning up the heat late in the afternoon. Open 09:00–18:00, entrance free until 11:00, and after, R20.
