Special screening: Gaia at The Bioscope

SAT APR 23 Taking to The Bioscope’s big screen this week is Gaia, a new South African horror film directed by Jaco Bouwer that recently won Best Film at the Silverskerem film festival. A creepy cultish religion, strange post-human beings, and of course a deserted cabin in the woods, all feature prominently in this creative ecological horror fantasy that turns Mother Nature, into Monster Nature. Screening at 18:00 and 20:00 on Saturday. There are also screenings on April 28 and 29. Tickets R80, available at thebioscope.co.za.

Blu Betty pop-up in Kramerville

FRI APR 22 & SAT APR 23 Blu Betty’s pop-up shop events always attract enthusiastic crowds, drawn by the chance to shop the online-only brand’s latest range of beautiful handmade leather footwear in a variety of quirky and cute designs, including cut-price ‘imperfect perfect’ factory flawed pairs. Find the pop-up at Katy’s Palace Bar in Kramerville.  Doors open at 08:30, closing at 19:00 on Fri and 16:00 on Sat. Find out more here.

Cotton Fest 2022

SAT APR 23 & SUN APR 24 Founded by the late rapper Riky Rick, Cotton Fest is back for a third edition at The Station in Newtown. There are more than 130 acts on the lineup including Cassper Nyovest, Distruction Boys, Kwesta, Nasty C, Okmalumkoolkat, Sjava, and Stogie T, plus other attractions including pop-up basketball courts, a skating ramp, a street fashion market and more. Joburg Ballet fundraiser at Rand Club

SUN APR 24 Step into the extraordinary at this unique fundraising event at the fabulous Rand Club, organised by Friends of Joburg Ballet. Johannesburg’s very own professional ballet company will be performing live in the grandeur of the historic Rand Club and the event includes drinks and lunch. Techno DJ Amelie Lens at Constitution Hill

FRI APR 22 Calling all techno music fans, international techno sensation Amelie Lens makes her debut on the South African stage this month, taking over Constitution Hill for a one-night-only explosive techno experience. Put your dancing shoes on for an energetic set from the Belgian techno star that will be going on long into the night. Gates open at 18:00 and the party continues until 02:00. The Acoustics Africa at The Beach Rivonia

SUN APR 24 The Beach in Rivonia hosts The Acoustics Africa, a youthful local event celebrating music, fashion, and culture. You can expect live music sets from various unsigned artists showcasing an array of genres including jazz, zouk, passada, salsa, as well as acoustic RnB to name a few. Takes place at The Beach Rivonia, 19 Wessel Rd, Rivonia from 14:00. Tickets R100 available online here or R150 at the door

Exhibition launch and artist walkabout at Bag Factory

SAT APR 23 from 10:00 Join artist Su Tomesen at the Bag Factory artist studios in Fordsburg for a walkabout of the new video installation Street Vendors: Medellín, Tirana, Johannesburg, Yogyakarta. Filmed in four cities on four continents, the installation showcases four films that follow the story of four street vendors in different cities who successfully generate income from their business.
