If you love to travel and see different places around the world or are obligated to travel for your career, you have likely already experienced some long flights in an airplane. While most people may groan at the thought of a 12 or 15-hour flight, it doesn’t have to be a horrible experience.

Being confined on an airplane can be restricting and make time feel as though it has stopped. Dealing with limited space, other passengers, and hours of cramped confinement can be a tough way to start your vacation. However, with the right tools and gadgets, you can turn your flight into an enjoyable ride.

Once you have everything you need, including a good travel pillow, you will be able to relax, kick back and take off into the clouds without worry. Let’s take a closer look at a few tips on how to survive a long flight.

Comfortable Outfit

High style isn’t always comfortable at high altitudes. If you have a long flight ahead of you, it’s important to plan your wardrobe carefully. You will be sitting for a long time, so you don’t want to wear anything tight that will be constricting. Your best option is chic and cool casual, such as loose pants and tops with a sweater that you can wrap around your shoulders. Layers are essential to your comfort as the temperatures change during your flight. You may also want to wear compression socks that will help your circulation during your pressurized flight.

Travel Pillow

On longer flights, it’s essential to be comfortable enough to get some sleep. Most airlines have small pillows available for their passengers, but it’s better to bring your own. From plush and soft neck rings to inflatable pillows, there are many options for your comfort when trying to sleep on a plane. An inflatable pillow can be folded into a small parcel that will fit in your carry on bag. If you like a plush neck ring, to save room in your carry on bag you can wear your pillow as you board your flight.

Move Around

Sitting for long periods of time can be terrible for your circulation and cause muscle cramping. If your flight time is extended, it’s a good idea to try and move around as much as possible. Take a quick stroll up the aisle every two to three hours to give your legs and your back a stretch.

Headphones

Flights are expensive enough without having to dish out a bunch of extras like headphones. If you want to listen to some music, work on your computer, or enjoy an in-flight movie, it’s best to bring your own headphones.

Moisturize

The environment inside a plane can be arid. If you don’t want to show up to your destination with dry skin, you should bring a small regulation-sized moisturizer bottle with you. Use your moisturizer on your hands, neck, and face to refresh your skin.

Hydrate

There’s nothing wrong with ordering from the bar cart while you are on a long flight. However, you should keep your alcohol consumption to a minimum. The dry air in a plane can cause you to be dehydrated, and alcohol could make this worse. Always have a bottle of water with you so that you can stay properly hydrated while on your flight. Staying hydrated can help you to avoid the worst of your jetlag and prevent you from getting a headache.

Sleep Mask

If you have a long flight in the future, you may want to spend a large portion of the time sleeping or relaxing. The harsh interior lights of a plane can be a bit annoying and distracting. If you want some peace and darkness, you can bring your own sleep mask on the plane. It’s also a great tool to tell your seatmates that you would rather nap than chat.

Snacks

If you want to have something to eat during your flight, you should pack your own snacks in your carry-on bag. Cheese cubes, crackers, or almonds are all healthy snacks that will hold you through until you land at your destination.

Buy Your Tickets Early

Waiting for your ticket price to drop at the last minute might save you a few bucks but can also create a stressful situation. For long flights, it’s always best to buy your tickets early. When you buy your tickets early, you have a broader choice of times and seat placement.

Long flights can lead to exciting adventures in magical places. But, if you aren’t prepared, they can be an uncomfortable nightmare. Follow these tips to help you survive your next long flight.
