Welcome to Katowice and the #30th edition of Katowice In Your Pocket – Your Guide to Greater Silesia! We are thrilled to have made it to the ripe old age of 30. Over the last 30 issues we’ve reviewed hundreds of bars, cafes, restaurants, clubs and been to every major mine, museum, palace, church, music venue and hotel in the region. The quality of the region’s gastronomic, nightlife and hotel industries have improved across the board and the tourist infrastructure and cultural offerings are currently off the charts.
With so much having changed for the better we had to think long and hard about what would be a fitting feature for our 30th edition. We finally reached a consensus: Architecture. From the very beginning we were obsessed, amazed and occasionally appalled by the architecture we found scattered around the region. Like no other single topic, we have looked forward to documenting every new brick of this rapidly changing skyline. The 30th issue of Katowice In Your Pocket gives us the perfect occasion to take stock of Silesia’s unmistakably eclectic and increasingly iconic architecture. Katowice itself is in the midst of what can only be called an architectural renaissance and its new skyline is raking up accolades and awards that no other city in Poland can compare with. But it wasn’t so long ago that Silesia was the butt of many a joke because of its many communist eye-sores and post- industrial dinosaurs dotting the landscape. But one man’s finger painting is another man’s Picasso!
10 years ago we published Kato IYP issue #1, and my how things have changed since! One of the few constants has been the elegant grandeur of Hotel Monopol, featured on our first cover and still one of our top architectural picks a decade later.
