Well sprinkle us with sugar, the holidays are here again. If you’re looking for a bit of holiday magic abroad, there really aren’t many destinations better than Kraków. As if this dusty old UNESCO World Heritage Site (ahem) really needs the help, here comes Christmas with its tinsel and mistletoe, sleigh bells and spiced wine (p.111) to make the most merry impression possible. Resembling a frosted gingerbread village inside a giant snowglobe, Kraków not only looks the part and performs it well, but does so in its own special way. In addition to the inescapable Christmas fair occupying half of the market square (p.6), Poland’s ancient capital has a cavalcade of festive traditions and holiday happenings over the next two months, all of which we’ve dutifully highlighted in our annual Christmas feature beginning on p.6. We’ve also been good enough to present you (pun firmly intended) with some specific local gift ideas (p.10), so you can head home with a suitcase stuffed with stocking stuffers.
As we prepare to bid Do widzenia to 2019 – the milestone year marking Poland IYP’s 20th anniversary – we’re feeling fully satisfied with another industrious year in which we published 28 full print guides (including a complete rewrite of Gdańsk In Your Pocket), dozens of miniguides, and let’s not even contemplate the number of clouds that were cut down in order to accommodate all of our online content. You can bet that in 2020 we’ll continue our commitment to publishing the best damn city guides on the market, knowing that readers like yourself appreciate our effort. As always, thanks for reading, and from all of us here at IYP, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Now pop the champagne.
